Engagement Ideas for Black History Month

Thoughtful Ways to Celebrate, Learn, and Connect

February is Black History Month in the United States and Canada! This is a great opportunity to create meaningful moments of reflection, appreciation, and connection in the workplace through celebrating Black history.

The most impactful engagement ideas are thoughtful and centered on learning, culture, and community.

Here are three simple, thoughtful engagement ideas for Black History Month:

Celebrate Black Authors 📚

Stories expand perspective. One powerful way to honor Black History Month is by inviting employees to share voices that have shaped how they see the world.

Encourage team members to share a favorite book by a Black author. You can also expand this to include an essay, poem, children’s book, or article that stayed with them. Categories can include fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and memoirs.

Add a reflection prompt:
“What perspective did this author introduce you to?”

This approach keeps the experience personal, reflective, and human and creates a shared learning space rather than a formal lesson.

If you’d like inspiration, organizations like We Need Diverse Books, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and major publications often share curated reading lists for Black History Month.

Support Black-Owned Restaurants & Food Businesses 🍽

Food brings people together, and supporting local businesses creates real, tangible impact.

Invite employees to spotlight:

  • Black-owned restaurants, cafĂ©s, bakeries, or food trucks
  • Favorite dishes or takeout recommendations
  • Photos, menus, or short reviews
  • Hidden local gems others might not know

If you have an engagement budget, you could:

  • Run a simple raffle or lottery for a gift card to a Black-owned restaurants
  • Highlight featured businesses across company channels
  • Cater a breakfast or lunch from a Black-owned restaurant (great for in-office teams)

Spotlight Black Innovators & Creators 🎙

Black History Month is not only about honoring the past, but also about recognizing the creativity, leadership, and innovation shaping our world right now.

Consider running a weekly spotlight featuring Black voices across:

  • Media & Journalism: podcasts, writers, and storytellers shaping conversations
  • Music & Storytelling: artists influencing culture and narrative
  • Technology & Science: innovators driving change and discovery
  • Arts & Culture: creators redefining expression and identity
  • Community Leadership & Advocacy: voices building stronger communities

If you’re looking for meaningful sources and inspiration, we recommend:

This keeps the focus on living history and the voices, ideas, and creativity shaping today and tomorrow.

Building Meaningful Engagement

The most meaningful Black History Month initiatives are rooted in curiosity, appreciation, and joy. When organizations create space for stories, voices, and shared learning, they foster connection and help build a culture where people feel seen, respected, and valued.
